GQEBERHA – Two suspects have been arrested and stolen items recovered after a swift response by SAPS KwaDwesi members and supporting units in the early hours of Saturday, 19 April 2025.
Around 00:15, six armed suspects stormed a home in Gumede Street, Kwadwesi Extension. They threatened the residents, demanding car keys and valuables. The robbers fled with cell phones, a TV, a laptop, groceries, and a red Hyundai — even forcing the homeowner to transfer money to them.
Hours later, around 04:00, police spotted the stolen car near Nkandla and Winnie Street. When they tried to stop it, the suspects opened fire. Police returned fire, wounding two men, both 20, who were taken to hospital. Two others got away. One suspect is now in custody, while the second remains under police guard in hospital. They’ll appear in the New Brighton Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 22 April.
Officers recovered a 9mm firearm with ammo and followed leads to three more properties, where they found more suspected stolen items, including goods taken in the robbery.
Nelson Mandela Bay District Commissioner, Major General Vuyisile Ncata, praised the officers for their quick action, saying their efforts helped keep the community safe.
