POLICE CAPTAIN ARRESTED IN CONNECTION WITH ALLEGED 1MILLION THEFT

EAST LONDON- The East London-based Serious Organised Crime Investigation team, working in conjunction with other law enforcement agencies, arrested a police captain by the name of Ntombekhaya Patricia August (49) in connection with an alleged theft of over R1 million from the Crime Intelligence Offices in East London.

The incident reportedly took place on 10 January 2025, when a man entered the offices claiming to be visiting Ms. August. Once inside, he allegedly revealed a firearm and demanded money, resulting in August allegedly complying and handing over the substantial sum.

Following the incident, the matter was referred to the Hawks for investigation, with the team working diligently to uncover the truth and bring those responsible to justice. Within five days, Ms. August was arrested and charged with theft. She appeared before the East London Magistrate’s Court on 17 January 2025, with her bail application postponed until 22 January 2025.

Major General Mboiki Obed Ngwenya, the Provincial Head of the Hawks, commended the team on their dedication and swift resolution to the case. “This arrest is a clear example of our dedication to uncovering the truth and bringing those responsible for crime to justice,” he stated, emphasizing that “no one is above the law.”

On 23rd January 2025, August was granted bail of R4000 by the East London Magistrate Court. Following her bail hearing, the East London Magistrate Court ordered August to appear again on 4th March 2025 for further investigations into the alleged theft and staged robbery.
