ALIWAL NORTH- In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, a 29-year-old man is set to face charges of dealing in drugs in the Aliwal North Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.
The arrest came following a collaborative operation involving various law enforcement agencies in the Eastern Cape region.
According to Warrant Officer Ndiphiwe Mhlakuvana, a spokesperson for the Hawks, the operation was initiated based on intelligence indicating a truck carrying illicit substances en route to Johannesburg via Aliwal North.
The joint team swiftly intercepted the truck as it approached the central business district of Aliwal North.
Upon searching the vehicle, law enforcement officials discovered over 300 kg of crystal meth carefully concealed inside.
The suspect, found inside the truck, failed to provide a satisfactory explanation for the presence of the drugs, leading to his immediate arrest.
The seized drugs, totaling 314.45 kilograms and valued at R51 million on the street, along with the truck, have been secured for further investigation.
The suspect is scheduled to make his initial court appearance at the Aliwal North Magistrate’s Court on March 27, 2025.
“The successful interception and apprehension of the suspect in possession of this substantial quantity of drugs highlight the effectiveness of our collaborative efforts in combating organized crime,” stated Warrant Officer Mhlakuvana.
This operation serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against illicit drug trafficking and the unwavering commitment of law enforcement agencies to ensuring the safety and security of our communities.
