EAST LONDON-Tragedy struck on the R72 near East London when a collision between a truck and two other vehicles resulted in the untimely demise of two individuals on Monday afternoon.
Unathi Binqose who is spokesperson of the Deprived of Transport in the Eastern Cape reported that the victims were pronounced dead at the scene.
The aftermath of the accident caused significant disruptions, with the road remaining closed beyond 3pm as traffic authorities redirected vehicles away from the area. Border Towing was called in to remove the truck from the scene, while emergency responders had to use the jaws of life to retrieve the bodies of the victims from their severely damaged vehicles.
As the investigation into the cause of the accident progresses, crash investigators have been dispatched to the scene to determine whether the condition of the vehicles or the state of the road contributed to the collision.
Binqose also revealed that a case of culpable homicide has been opened and the vehicles involved in the accident will undergo inspection before being towed to either the nearest police station or a designated area for insurance companies.
