Bisho, July 20, 2024 – The Wellness Quarterly Games, organized by the Department of Health’s head office, kicked off at Bisho Stadium, BCM, and Amathole grounds, bringing together employees from various regions for a day of sports, activities, and team-building exercises.
The event began with netball and soccer tournaments. The games were split into three venues to ensure all tournaments could be completed in one day, rather than the usual two days.
In the netball tournament, Komani Hospital’s team emerged victorious in the first match, winning against Mathatha Regional Hospital with a score of 12-9. They then took on Settlers, winning with a score of 15-2. In the final match, Mthatha General Hospital won against Komani Hospital with an emerging score of 14-11.
Coach Bomilazi Nodilika praised her team’s perseverance, saying, “The first round was tough, but we gained strength in the second round.” She emphasized that the games were not just about winning, but about the experience and unity.

On the soccer field, the Department of Health’s Bhisho head office team played against Settlers, winning with a score of 3-0. In the semi-finals, Komani Hospital took on Humansdorp, winning with a score of 3-0. In the second semi-final, Bhisho head office lost 2-5 against Mthatha General Hospital. In the final, Mthatha General Hospital won 3-2 in a penalty shootout against Komani Hospital.
Coach Siphumle Qukani highlighted the importance of wellness games, saying, “These games are meant to encourage employees to interact with each other, stay active, and be productive at work.” He emphasized that the department’s aim is to promote a healthy work environment.
Songezo Xayimpi, coach of Humansdorp Hospital’s soccer team, praised the initiative, saying, “Wellness games are a great way to have fun and challenge ourselves. Teamwork was our biggest challenge, but we enjoyed every moment.”

Yamkela Myaluza the secretary for department of health provincial sport committee, commended the effectiveness of the Wellness Games, saying they played a crucial role in promoting employee well-being.
The Wellness Quarterly Games demonstrated the Department of Health’s commitment to employee well-being, providing a platform for connection, stress relief, and motivation. As employees left the stadiums, they carried with them memories of a fun-filled day and a renewed sense of unity .
