We are born ready’ – MK Party to contest its first municipal polls

 uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) is rolling up its sleeves as they eye the local government elections with confidence. 

The 2026 Local Government Elections in South Africa are officially scheduled for 4 November.

President Cyril Ramaphosa made the announcement. 

This will be the first time the party led by former president Jacob Zuma will be contesting local government since its formation. MK Party Spokesperson, Nhlamulo Ndhlela, said his party was born ready and has already positioned itself as an official opposition party. 

“We’re going to be ready, and we’re going to ensure that we demonstrate that we are fit to govern and we’re ready to govern through the will of the people.

Ndhlela said they remain clear and focused in securing most of the local municipalities. 

“The MK Party is the only political party that is the fastest growing political party in the country that people resonate with. And this is the platform that they’re going to vote for to govern them. So come 2026 local government elections, you can rest assured uMkhonto weSizwe will again surprise a lot of people as we have. And the majority of the municipalities are going to be led by the MK Party,” he said. 

On the matter regarding coalitions, Ndlela said they are not going into the polls with the mindset of entering a coalition. However, if it becomes necessary, such discussions will be had at that point in time.
