Virginia Hosts Successful “Ubuhlanti” Exhibition by Xolile Madinda

From November 15-20, 2024, hip-hop artist, social activist, and community educator Xolile Madinda brought his thought-provoking exhibition, “Ubuhlanti,” to Virginia.

Madinda’s inspiration for “Ubuhlanti” stemmed from the realization that many people are unaware of the importance and significance of this concept. Ubuhlanti, a traditional practice, holds great value and purpose within each household. Madinda aimed to educate and raise awareness about the significance of ubuhlanti through this exhibition.

The exhibition, originated in Makanda over 10 years and has made its way to Virginia, offering a unique perspective on Ubuhlanti. Through visual aids and interactive displays, Madinda reflected on how Ubuhlanti is a reflection of the past, present and the future, highlighting its role as a social gathering space for like-minded individuals.

The exhibition showcased various aspects of ubuhlanti, including the significance of the umbilical cord and the value of cultural heritage. Madinda’s goal was to challenge the notion that ubuhlanti is exclusive to males, emphasizing its importance for everyone.

Madinda’s inspiration for the exhibition was rooted in his desire to make a positive impact in his community. Through art, he aimed to raise awareness about the value of ubuhlanti and promote social change.

Following the success of the Virginia exhibition, Madinda plans to host another “Ubuhlanti” exhibition and establish the Black Power Station as an international art destination.

By sharing his vision and creativity, Xolile Madinda continues to inspire and educate audiences about the significance of ubuhlanti and its role in promoting social understanding.
