The Eastern Cape Department of Transport has reported that another vehicle belonging to a road construction team has been hijacked at gunpoint.
This incident, which took place in the Chris Hani District, marks the third attack in that area and the fourth in the province.
Provincial Traffic spokesperson Unathi Bhinqose shared details of the incident, saying, “On Wednesday, the driver was working on road rehabilitation when a group of armed men in a Polo stopped him.”
The attackers demanded the vehicle keys and forced the driver into the backseat before driving him around for some time.
Fortunately, the driver was able to contact his office and the police after being released.
The vehicle tracker was activated, leading to the discovery of the hijacked double-cab bakkie hours later in a forest near Cofimbaba. However, it was found stripped of valuable parts.
Authorities are urging increased safety measures as these hijackings continue to pose a serious threat to workers in the area.
