South Africa braces for gale-force winds and rough seas

June 23, 2025

The South African Weather Service(SAWS) has warned of a cold front expected to pass south of the country on Monday, bringing gale-force winds of 60-70 km/h along the coast between Plettenberg Bay and East London.

This will result in very rough to high seas with wave heights of 5-7 meters, potentially reaching 8 meters offshore.

In addition, these weather conditions will pose significant risks, including difficult navigation for vessels at sea, with small vessels at risk of taking on water and capsizing. There is also a potential disruption to harbors, ports and beachfront activities as well as a danger to human life.

The extended forecast indicates fine and cold to cool conditions on Tuesday and Wednesday, with a shift to cloudy and very cold weather in the southwest on Wednesday.

“There is a 60-80% chance of showers and rain and snow is possible over mountains in the Western Cape and southern parts of the Northern Cape on Wednesday”, said SAWS

An intense cold front is expected to affect the Western and Northern Cape provinces from Wednesday into Thursday.
