Severe Weather Warning Issued for Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal: Rain, Snow, and Damaging Winds Expected

Residents in the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal should prepare for heavy rain, damaging winds, and even snow on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The South African Weather Service has issued a Yellow Level 1 warning for disruptive rain in the Eastern Cape. This weather event, driven by an upper air trough combined with a surface high, is expected to cause localized flooding in several municipalities, including Nelson Mandela Bay, Sundays River Valley, Ndlambe, Makana, and others.

In addition, a Yellow Level 2 warning for disruptive snow has been announced. The affected areas include Chris Hani and Joe Gqabi district municipalities, along with Dr Beyers Naude, Blue Crane Route, Raymond Mhlaba, Matatiele, and Umzimvubu.

KwaZulu-Natal faces a Yellow Level 2 alert for damaging winds, with strong south-westerly gusts forecast. The Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) reported that the current inclement weather has already damaged several homes.

Fire Services responded to two homes set ablaze by thunderstorms. In Phoenix, a woman received on-site treatment for smoke inhalation and anxiety after her house caught fire. KZN VIP’s Gareth Naidoo confirmed that firefighters arrived quickly to control the blaze. A separate incident occurred in Manor Gardens, where a unit caught fire but was swiftly extinguished, with no injuries reported.

Residents in these areas should stay vigilant and take necessary precautions to remain safe during this period of severe weather.
