Medical Doctor Arrested for Tax Evasion

MTHATHA- A 47-year-old medical doctor is facing charges of fraud and tax evasion after being arrested by the Hawks in a joint operation with South African Revenue Services(SARS) and the National Prosecuting Authority(NPA).

The arrest follows suspicions raised by SARS regarding tax discrepancies, leading to a detailed investigation by the authorities.

Eastern Cape spokesperson for the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation(DPCI) Lieutenant Colonel Avele Fumba said, “The accused allegedly failed to submit tax returns for several years and disregarded compliance reminders from SARS.”

This case mirrors a similar incident where another medical doctor was found guilty of defrauding SARS of R17 million by not submitting tax returns.

Despite receiving significant income, the doctor failed to declare it to the tax authorities. The NPA confirmed that the doctor has now submitted all outstanding tax returns.

The accused is set to appear in court on February 6, 2025,
