The Afrika Mayibuye Movement has welcomed the resignation of suspended Deputy National Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Shadrack Sibiya from the South African Police Service (SAPS), calling for the speedy prosecution of allegations against him.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the movement said Sibiya resigned during a disciplinary hearing and faces allegations including sexual grooming of a 16-year-old, rape of an 18-year-old, human trafficking and alleged links to organised crime.
The movement called on the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and law enforcement agencies to ensure that all allegations are investigated and prosecuted without fear or favour.
It also welcomed reports of recent arrests and related actions involving individuals mentioned in the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, saying these developments could help dismantle criminal networks undermining the country’s institutions, communities and economy.
The movement warned that delays or selective action against alleged corruption and criminality could embolden individuals accused of using state institutions for personal gain.
It said South Africans deserve a police service and justice system that protect vulnerable people and hold those in positions of power accountable.
The Afrika Mayibuye Movement pledged to continue monitoring the processes and demanding accountability at all levels.
