Suspended EMPD acting chief, commissioner Julius Mkhwanazi returns to the dock after telling the Madlanga Commission that he doesn’t sleep at night because of the murder incidents that have taken place in his metro.
The killings among others include Emmanuel Mbhense and Marius van der Merwe, known as witness D.
Testifying before the commission on Wednesday, Mkhwanazi said he does not understand how he got involved in the corruption scandals. He cried foul for being accused of every wrongdoing that is committed in Ekurhuleni.
“I don’t know how I got entangled in the corruption in Ekurhuleni… I can’t be blamed for everything,” he said.
This is despite his failing to explain a late-night trip with no record linked to an alleged police operation, no clear operation, and no identified commander.
Mkhwanazi said he rushed to a scene at 2am on April 15, 2022, after receiving a call from police informant Jaco Hanekom about the recovery of a stolen truck.
Madlanga rejected his explanation, calling it “senseless” and “implausible,” and accused him directly of not telling the truth.
Mkhwanazi maintained he saw nothing and left when he realised SAPS was involved. That claim is disputed.
The inquiry is underway.
