Eskom Faces Load-Shedding Challenge

South Africa’s power utility, Eskom, recently announced the implementation of stage 2 load-shedding to manage limited generation capacity.

The measure will be in effect from 4pm on Tuesday until 10pm on Thursday to ensure continued electricity supply during working days.

According to Eskom, the setbacks were caused by the delayed return of generation units and unplanned breakdowns, resulting in a temporary loss of over 13,000MW.

Despite the challenges, Eskom highlighted that load-shedding incidents have decreased compared to previous years.

Group CEO Dan Marokane emphasized the importance of the new operational excellence programme in restoring performance. “We are reinforcing oversight, strengthening accountability, and aligning service providers with stricter standards,” Marokane stated.

Eskom reassured the public that efforts are underway to address the delays in returning units, with three major projects on track to add 2,500MW to the grid.

The power utility remains committed to consistent improvement through systems, people, and processes.

While facing pressures, Eskom remains optimistic about the future, with a focus on expanding capacity and enhancing operational performance.

Despite the current challenges, Eskom is determined to strengthen the power supply and deliver on its commitments for a more reliable electricity grid.
