MTHATHA-Rescue operations have resumed in Mthatha after being halted overnight, following a tragic incident where a bus carrying schoolchildren was swept away by floods while crossing a bridge. The search party is determined to find any remaining survivors.
Eight bodies, including that of the bus driver have been recovered so far, according to Eastern Cape community safety official Xolile Nqatha. Three students were rescued on Tuesday, found clinging to trees. The bus has been located on a riverbank with no one inside.
Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane visited the scene, expressing his satisfaction with the emergency response. “While the situation is a difficult one, I’m quite happy with the response of the emergency services,” Mabuyane said.
The severe weather conditions have claimed 14 lives in South Africa, with nearly 500,000 homes left without electricity. President Cyril Ramaphosa has offered condolences to the families of the victims, urging citizens to exercise caution during the harsh winter weather.
The Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal provinces have been worst-affected, with some major roads closed to prevent further casualties. The government continues to work tirelessly to restore power connections and support affected communities.
