BUDGET CUTS EXPECTED IN BASIC EDUCATION

Basic Education has impending budget cuts. According to the Minister of Basic Education Siviwe Gwarube, the Sector is facing a financial crisis and under pressure.

The minister said seven provinces will not be able to cover their annual expense in the next four years unless there are measures taken to mitigate the risk.

“We have seen provinces unable to fill some teacher vacancies and under pressure, we then analyzed and made projections.

We saw that if this budget allocation continues we will face a massive shortfall in 3 years” said the Minister

Adding she said that she will try and protect as many teachers and assured the country that this does not mean teachers will be retrenched but vacancies may not be filled.
