Defender Moses Mphekgoane recently graduated with a BCom degree.

While most 21-year-olds are figuring out their next groove, Orlando Pirates’s DStv Diski Challenge (DDC) star Moses Mphekgoane is out here proving that you can slide-tackle a striker on Saturday and balance a corporate ledger on Monday.

The Sea Robbers’ defender recently traded his Bucs jersey for a graduation gown, bagging a BCom in finance from the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits). And in true Mzansi fashion, where talent is nothing without grace, he didn’t take the credit for himself.

Moses Mphekgoane is rewriting the narrative of South African footballers.

Taking to social media to share his milestone, the “Scholar-Warrior” kept it humble: “This is only through Christ, not by my strength or hard work.”

Let’s be honest: football careers are short. Brutally short. One bad tackle. One anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). One moment. Done.

Studies in professional football show that while most players recover from injuries, up to 1-2% can face career-ending setbacks, especially with severe ligament damage.

Ninety minutes of magic can’t compete with the 40+ years of life that come after the final whistle. Mphekgoane gets that.

In South Africa, where many players face financial uncertainty after their football careers, Mphekgoane offers a different path.

Football’s unpredictability means even star careers can be cut short. His journey, marked by both achievement and resilience, serves as a reminder to every hustler from Ekasi that, as the saying goes, “Black child, it is possible.”

Earning a degree in finance, investment and risk management demands analytical and mathematical skills, as well as dedication.

The curriculum is rigorous, packed with advanced modelling, quantitative analysis and high-stakes decisions.

Mphekgoane’s journey is one of grit, leadership and unwavering faith. A graduate of the SAFA School of Excellence, he was groomed for greatness from a young age.

His leadership qualities shone as he captained Orlando Pirates’ reserve team and played a pivotal role in their first-ever league title bid.

In March 2025, Mphekgoane made his senior debut in a 1- 0 victory over Chippa United, solidifying himself as a key fixture in the Pirates’ backline.

This season alone, he’s been instrumental in securing three clean sheets in four matches and has netted four goals as the team’s penalty taker, a rare feat for a defender.

His success hasn’t gone unnoticed. Dubbed the “Scholar-Warrior” by fans, Moses earned his first Bafana Bafana call-up in June 2025, a testament to his skill and determination.

On social media, fans have rallied behind him, christening him the “General John Stones” of the DDC.

William Ramodike, perfectly captured the sentiment: “Congrats for being exemplary to other football players. Show them that there is life after retirement.”

The sleuths on social media couldn’t help but compare Mphekgoane to the best, while some fans like Luvuyo Minqweno and Nkosingiphile Mazibuko used the moment to poke fun at rivals, joking that “Chiefs thinks it’s AI”. Meanwhile others gave him the ultimate respect.

Mastermind Matome dubbed him the “General John Stones” of the DDC, calling him the best centre-back in the league.

The most powerful comments came from those who understood the “short career” reality. William Ramodike praised Moses for being an example to others, reminding everyone that “there is life after retirement”.

It echoes the Jim Rohn quote: “Moses isn’t falling into someone else’s plan; he’s designing his own.”

The fans aren’t just happy for his degree, they want him to lead the senior team.

Tizozo BWx and Ma Sobhuza Mzizi kept it simple with a: “Well done, Captain”, while Lista Elenchos predicted he is a “future 1st team captain” because of his cool and composed nature on the ball.

Even Thabo Bucs reminded him that he is now “reaping what he sowed” through his double grind.

For Mphekgoane, stepping onto Wits’ iconic Great Hall steps was as significant as stepping onto the pitch at Orlando Stadium.

It’s a victory not just for him but for every young person who dares to believe that greatness can be found in both discipline and degrees.
