SAFA take action over Golden Arrows, Stellenbosch penalty howler

Mosemeng’s sidelining follows a recent meeting of the SAFA Referees Review Committee, which assessed match officials’ performances across the Betway Premiership, Motsepe Foundation Championship and amateur tiers.

The official has since been found guilty of a critical error after failing to award Stellenbosch a penalty in the second half, with Arrows then breaking the deadlock moments later before going on to secure a 1-0 victory to book their place in the quarterfinals. While officials have previously faced lengthy bans for errors deemed to have influenced results, this time the review committee imposed a one-month sanction in line with existing disciplinary precedents.

Stellenbosch coach Gavin Hunt did not hold back in his post-match reaction at the time, renewing calls for the introduction of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology in the Premier Soccer League.

“The referee can say sorry, but I don’t think they say sorry, do they. It affects livelihoods. That’s why VAR has to come in, especially in South Africa,” Hunt said at the time.

“Every week there are controversial decisions and they’re not even close calls. The referees go home, and we’re the ones affected.”

Arrows counterpart Manqoba Mngqithi also acknowledged the broader debate around officiating standards, reiterating the need for technological assistance in a game he believes has become too fast for match officials to manage without support.

As per standard protocol, Mosemeng will undergo a rehabilitation and assessment programme during his cooling-off period and could return to toplight duties before the end of the season.
