The South African Music Awards (SAMAs) have unveiled the list of nominees for their milestone 30th edition, and Tyla, the international South African sensation, is leading the way with five nominations. The announcement was made earlier today at a star-studded event at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand, marking the start of the prestigious awards season.
Tyla’s self-titled album earned her nominations in some of the most coveted categories: SAMPRA Album of the Year, Ukhozi FM Female Artist of the Year, SANTAM Newcomer of the Year, and Best Pop Album. She also landed a nomination in the Best Collaboration category for her chart-topping single “Water,” featuring international star Travis Scott.
The nominees’ announcement sets the stage for the SAMA30 ceremony, scheduled for 2 November 2024, also at Gallagher Convention Centre. This year’s theme, Less Noise, More Music, highlights a renewed focus on artistry, creativity, and celebrating the true essence of South African music.
Other Leading Nominees
Following closely behind Tyla, Kabza De Small and Mthunzi, as well as Mbuso Khoza, each secured three nominations. Kabza, the Amapiano icon, is nominated for Album of the Year and Motsweding FM Best Amapiano Album for Isimo. He’s also in the running for Radio 2000 Duo/Group of the Year with Mthunzi for Isimo. Meanwhile, Mbuso Khoza’s work on the Shaka iLembe Soundtrack Album Volume 2 earned him nods for Best Produced Album, Best Traditional Music Album, and Best Engineered Album.
In the hotly contested Lesedi FM Male Artist of the Year category, Amapiano heavyweights Kelvin Momo, Daliwonga, and De Mthuda go head-to-head with rapper Priddy Ugly and Maskandi star Ugatsheni. For Ukhozi FM Female Artist of the Year, Tyla is up against top talents such as Brenda Mtambo, Lwah Ndlunkulu, Lordkez, and Xolly Mncwango.
The SANTAM Newcomer of the Year category also reflects the growing prominence of women in the industry, with Tyla, Lwah Ndlunkulu, and Sykes vying for the award alongside Die Piesangskille and Johan Balt, and Joliza.

With a total of 31 categories, the SAMAs remain a key platform for recognising outstanding musical achievements across all genres. From pop and Amapiano to faith music and traditional sounds, the nominees for SAMA30 are a testament to the diversity and creativity within the industry.

Performers included local legends like Zola and Khuli Chana, along with rising stars such as Bassie and Easy Freak. The performances paid tribute to the 30 years of democracy in South Africa, featuring hits that have shaped the music landscape since the inception of the SAMAs in 1995.
As the countdown to SAMA30 begins, the stage is set for a night of celebration and recognition of South Africa’s finest musical talents. With Tyla leading the charge, this year’s awards promise to be one of the most exciting yet.
