The briefing was conducted by the minister of education Fundile Gade at ICC East London on the 19 January 2023. “Allow me to give an account of the Eastern Cape performance in the 2023 National Senior Certificate results” said minister Fundile Gade. He carried on saying the year 2023 is marked by improved quality and good standard of school based assessment submitted to uMALUSI for resulting. The class of 2023 has obtained 81.1 of pass percentage a 4.1 improvement from 77.33 pass mark of the class of 2022. Over the term this represent shift from the 76.5 of 2019 to 81.4 in 2023 representing a 4.9 shift over the term from 2019 up until to date.
The Eastern Cape has produced a total of 31600 passes over the term of 2019 to date. The number of Bachelors passes increased by 2.8 from 36.8 in 2022 to 39.6 in 2023, in real terms it means the 37898 of the 95687 learners obtained a bachelor pass in 2023 compared to 34974 of 2022.
In term of the district performance in 2023, 8 districts have performed above 80% remember we have 12 district in the province, now we able to take 8 out of 12 in the league of 80’s in the country with remaining 4 performing between 76 and 79 which means we do have district in this province that is below 75% row. The top 5 performing district in the province 2023 are as follow:
- Alfred Nzo East District 85% improved by 8.1% from 77.0
- Alfred Nzo West District 84.2 improved by 1.5% from 82.7%
- Chris Hani District East 84.1% improved by 84.1% from 4.5 from 77.6%
- Joe Gqabi 83.9% improved by 83.9% improved by 12.2 from 71.7%
- Nelson Mandela improved by 83.1% improved by 2.7% from 84.4%
Top district in terms of Bachelor’s passes
- Chris Hani 45.1% improved by 3.8% from 41.3%
- Buffalo City 42.6% decreased by 1.5% from 45.5%
- Alfred Nzo West 42.2% improved by 1.7% from 40.5%
- Alfred Nzo East 41.9% improved by 5.2% from 36.7
Not a single district has obtained less than 30% in bachelor passes in the province.
