The Deputy Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Dr. Namane Dickson Masemola, is presently leading a high-level oversight and accountability engagement at the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality. He is accompanied by the MEC for the Department of Cogta Eastern Cape , Mr. Zolile Williams. The engagement forms part of the national “Every Municipality Must Work” programme.

This strategic initiative seeks to enhance governance, strengthen service delivery, and promote accountability across the local government sphere. It is implemented through the District Development Model (DDM), which advocates for integrated and coordinated planning across all spheres of government.

In his address to the leadership of Buffalo City Metro, MEC Williams raised a critical concern regarding the detrimental effects of political interference in municipal administration. He remarked:

“When politicians interfere in administration, it creates confusion over roles and responsibilities. This lack of clarity fuels political instability, which continues to undermine the effective functioning of our municipalities.”

The session is attended by key stakeholders, including officials from National Treasury, councillors from Buffalo City Metro, and other government representatives. It marks a proactive effort to identify and resolve governance challenges that hinder effective municipal performance.
