GQEBERHA- In a shocking tribunal session, retired judge Bernard Ngoepe suggested that the misconduct inquiry involving Eastern Cape Judge President Selby Mbenenge should not be public, fearing it could damage the judiciary’s reputation.
The inquiry has revealed intimate and embarrassing details about the relationship between Mbenenge and court secretary Andiswa Mengo.
Mbenenge, who is accused of sending explicit messages and making unwanted advances, claimed that his communications were playful and consensual.
He admitted to sending a peeled banana emoji, which he argued was not sexual, and interpreted Mengo’s cooking messages as flirtatious.
Mengo testified that Mbenenge ignored her refusals and made her uncomfortable.
The inquiry has highlighted issues of power dynamics between men and women in the workplace. Mbenenge’s defense included cultural arguments about persistence in relationships, which he believes are misunderstood.
The tribunal continues to hear evidence, with cross-examinations expected to reveal more about this troubling case.
