The Eastern Cape education department has suspended five pupils from a senior secondary school in the Mdantsane area following a violent incident where a girl was slapped and harassed by a group of boys.
The incident was captured on video and circulated on social media, prompting swift action from the department.
Education MEC Fundile Gade and officials visited the school on Monday to address the situation. The bus driver transporting the pupils was also suspended, according to department spokesperson Vuyiseka Mboxeka.
In addition, disciplinary processes will commence on Thursday, led by the provincial office.
The incident appears to be a retaliation against the girl for reporting the group for damaging a school fence. The girl’s mother has lodged an assault complaint with the police and demands the group be arrested. The suspensions and disciplinary actions aim to ensure the safety and well-being of all students.
