The Presidency has confirmed President Cyril Ramaphosa will address the nation on Friday evening on the government’s response to the recent deaths of school children from food-borne illnesses. Presidency spokesperson Vincent Magwenya said: “President Cyril Ramaphosa will this evening, Friday, 15 November 2024, address the nation on government’s response to the recurring instances of food-borne illnesses which have claimed the lives of children.” The address will take place at 19:30. On Wednesday, Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni said a Cabinet meeting this week highlighted the food poisoning crisis as a significant national concern. Food poisoning has claimed the lives of more than 10 children in the past two months. Many of them became ill after eating snacks from spaza shops. The government’s decision to suspend food sales on and around school premises was met with widespread criticism.
