Mama Joy to Watch 2026 World Cup from Home

Iconic South African football supporter Joy “Mama Joy” Chauke has confirmed she will watch Bafana Bafana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign from her television in South Africa after being excluded from the official supporters’ group travelling to Mexico.

The celebrated superfan, known for her colourful presence and passionate support at major tournaments, expressed disappointment over not making Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie’s final list. Chauke highlighted perceived inconsistencies, noting that around R800,000 was previously spent on her and another supporter, yet only the latter was selected for the Mexico leg.

Despite earlier securing private sponsorship through a sports brand to attend the tournament, recent indications from Chauke suggest those plans have not materialised, leading her to watch the matches at home.

In a recent post, the superfan stated: “All Superfans are there except Mamajoy… She will watch on Tv, no Problem.” She added thanks to her ancestors and faith, accepting the situation while congratulating the selected supporters.

McKenzie’s office has defended the selection through a “Lucky Fans Competition” aimed at giving opportunities to a broader range of everyday supporters rather than repeating past beneficiaries. The minister has stressed there is no personal grudge against Mama Joy but a focus on fairness with limited resources.

The development continues to divide football fans, with some lamenting the absence of the national icon in the stands and others push for fresh faces.

Bafana Bafana will face Mexico on Thursday, June 11, 2026, at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. It’s the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup
