SAFA expels four suspended members for taking matters to court

SAFA held constitutional and ordinary congresses at the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg this past weekend, and the suspension of Gladwin White, Monde Montshiwa, Orapeleng Setlhare and Emma Hendricks was one of the contentious points.

Speaking to the media after the congress yesterday, SAFA Vice-President Linda Zwane explained this decision, which was voted for by the delegates…

The SAFA Congress resolution was a follow-up after the four members were charged for allegedly having disrupted an NEC meeting at the SAFA House in March. They were served with their charges last week, but Zwane says the expulsion arises from taking the association to court, something which he says their statutes go against.

What is likely to be contested in this expulsion is how the decision was taken, with a simple majority or two-thirds majority being the sticking points…

“The said members were suspended by the NEC pending the DC. Whilst the process was leading to that, they decided to go to court which is against the SAFA and FIFA statutes. Their decision to take the matter to court has resulted in this situation.”

Zwane couldn’t confirm whether Jordaan will stand for the fourth term or not, even though it’s been widely reported that the dominant faction that is the Football Transformation Forum (FTF) is backing him for another term…

“That matter belongs to the regions and I think we as the leadership of SAFA we respect that. Once the regions have made their determination, then we can say who is standing for the position and who isn’t.”

The Congress was attended by the Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie, newly elected COSAFA President Tariq Babitseng, and also Bafana Bafana and Banyana Bafana head coaches Hugo Broos and Desiree Ellis, respectively.

Jordaan feels that SAFA is now ready for the elective congress in September…
